CHICAGOLAND SERBIAN-AMERICANS MOURN PASSING OF SPIRITUAL LEADER
Chicago, IL – Serbian-Americans from throughout the greater Chicagoland metropolitan area will gather at Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral on Tuesday night in prayerful remembrance of their spiritual leader and head of the influential Serbian Orthodox Church, His Holiness Patriarch Pavle, who passed away on Sunday in Belgrade, Serbia, at the age of 95 following a prolonged illness.
Known and respected throughout the Orthodox Christian world as a modest man of profound spiritual depth, His Holiness Patriarch Pavle led the Serbian Orthodox Church through the tumultuous period of Yugoslavia’s violent break-up continuously appealing for peace and reconciliation.
As patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, which has scores of parishes and three monasteries in the greater Chicagoland area, His Holiness was loved and respected by the approximately 250,000 Serbian Orthodox Christians who live in this area, which he visited on several occasions during his tenure as Patriarch.
The Orthodox Memorial Service will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 17th, 2009, beginning at 7:00 PM, at Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, 5701 N. Redwood Drive, Chicago, Illinois, 60631.
