IN MEMORIAM:
PATRIARCH MAKSIM OF BULGARIA


The head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Maksim, died on the night between Monday and Tuesday at age 98, the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church said on its website. "May God accept and have mercy on the soul of our much loved and much respected supreme leader, His Holiness Maksim, Patriarch of Bulgaria," the Synod said. Maksim was born in Oreshak, Lovech Region, on October 29, 1914. His birth name was Marin Naidenov Minkov. He graduated from the Sofia Seminary in 1935 and was enrolled at the Theology Faculty of Sofia University in 1938. In 1941, he became a monk, accepting the name Maksim. He became bishop in 1956 before being elected Metropolitan of Lovech in 1960. On July 4, 1971, Maksim was elected Patriarch of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.
