METROPOLITAN CHRISTOPHER CELEBRATES
THE NATIVITY AT THE CHICAGO CATHEDRAL

Chicago, IL - The Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great was served at the Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in Chicago on Tuesday, January 6, 2008, Christmas Eve. That evening, on the eve of the Nativity, Great Compline was served at the cathedral with a multitude of  Serbian Orthodox faithful from the Chicago area attending. Though the Cathedral is large in size it wasn't able to receive the many that came that evening from all directions of Chicago.  Mr. Milorad Blagojevich, the governor of Illinois, together with his wife and daughters, attended the service that evening.

Fr. Darko Spasojevic and Fr. Djuro Krosnjar addressed the faithful and afterward the Badnjak was blessed. The faithful approached in two lines to venerate the cross and after receiving he priest's blessing everyone received a branch from the blessed Badnjak. This tree symolizes Christ and His entrance into the world.

A lenten dinner was served for parishioners and guests.  Matins was served that evening at 10pm. Fr. Radovan delivered a homily afterward.

The ringing of the church bells and singing of the Christmas Troparion signified the beginning of the liturgical joy and celebration, the Nativity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The Nativity Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was officiated by His Eminence Metropolitan Christopher of Midwestern America, assisted by the cathedral clergy. The church was overfilled with the faithful, the majority of which partook of the Holy Sacrament of Communion. Just as every year the Epistle of His Holiness Patriarch Pavle and all the hierarchs of the Serbian Orthodox Church was read at the Divine Liturgy.
