LEARNING THE LITURGY AT ST. ELIJAH'S ANNUAL VBS

Merrillville, IN - St. Elijah Serbian Orthodox Church held its annual VBS camp from July 11-15. Camp was held on St. Elijah’s beautiful grounds and organized by Cindy Stojic and Nina Gavric.  This year, over 70 children from near and far participated in a memorable week full of fun activities and enriching classes which included religion, music, culture, and kolo dancing. Campers also participated in crafts, sports, and two field trips. It was a joy to see each child arrive with beaming smiles on their faces when they arrived Monday as they anxiously waited for camp to begin. Every year the children look forward to this camp where they form lifelong friendships and experience the joy and beauty of our Orthodox faith and Serbian culture.

Campers participated in religious education classes with Father Aleksandar Novakovic. The central theme was Learning the Liturgy (which was continued from previous years) where children learned about the structure of the Liturgy and the importance. Campers were actively engaged and asked meaningful questions which contributed to their knowledge.  Music was taught by choir member, Milka Popovich, where she focused on teaching the children about singing responses for the Liturgy.

On Tuesday July 12th, the feast day of Sts. Peter and Paul, the children participated in singing the responses to the Liturgy. The faithful that joined us that day were overjoyed in hearing the angelic voices of our children sing. Father Aleks emphasized to the campers the importance of attending and participating in the Divine Liturgy and how they are the future of our church.

Camp would not have been possible without the help of our counselors, mamas, bakas, and other parishioners who worked tirelessly to ensure our campers had another wonderful experience. Branko and Nancy Jocic organized a clean up the property on July 9th before the start of the camp to ensure the safety of everybody attending. We enjoyed delicious Lenten meals prepared by Andja Dujakovic and Branka Manojlovic. Campers also enjoyed the fun of Kolo dancing taught by Katarina Radoja. On Friday for culture class we enjoyed delicious krofne prepared by Nisa Milosavljevic who taught the children how this favorite is made. Nevenka Schumacher instructed our youngest campers (ages 2-4) throughout the week where she taught them how to cross themselves and led them on a tour of the church amongst many other fun activities.
Glory to God for another successful VBS and God Willing we are already looking forward to next year!
