SLAVA OF THE CATHEDRAL CHURCH IN BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA

Српски

On Sunday, September 24, 2017 the Slava of the Cathedral Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in Buenos Aires was celebrated.

His Grace Bishop Kirilo of Diocletia officiated at Holy Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, with the concelebration of Fr. Stefan Jovanovic and many faithful. The bishop, in his homily, stated that the feast of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos gives us a few important messages:

“The first of course is connected to the coming of the Son of God. The birth of Christ came at that moment of great moral and religious crisis of the chosen people and the world. However, only a small number of righteous were found among the people at that time and who also lived before that, who called upon the mercy of God to send His Son to save the world.

Bishop Kirilo added that among those righteous were the Virgin Mary, her parent Joachim and Anna and their relatives Elizabeth and Zacharias and their son St. John the Baptist.

He said that we should live our lives following the example of Christ and His Saints: “God is merciful to us thanks to His Saints. Thanks to one young girl of fifteen years old, Mary, who was not known to the vast majority, God descended to earth. This teaches us that God is always looking for the righteous and listening to them. This drives us to go that narrow path of truth and justice, and to support the righteous.

Bishop Kirilo of Diocletia said that the other message is related to the significance of preserving family life and teaching our children in the Church of God: “Joachim and Anna dedicated Mary to the temple when she was three years old so that she might be taught all things according to God’s commandments. This shows us that parents today should dedicate their children to the teaching of God’s commandments, that they bring them to church and through their example teach them how they should become active participants in the life of God’s Church”.

A Litiya and cutting of the Slava kolach followed liturgy. Kum for this year’s celebration was Dr. Djordje Dzodan, while kum for next year’s celebration will be Marijano Burman.

A luncheon was prepared by the cathedral church board, led by Protodeacon Nikola Radisa and with the selfless help of Sister Lidija and parishioner Marija Jovanovic and Uros Kostic. A group of Russian Orthodox were also present at the celebration.

Dr. Djordje Dzopan greeted everyone at the Slava meal, wishing everyone success and the prayerful intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. Remembering how the fathers of the present parishioners as well as his father, built the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos Cathedral in Buenos Aires, he noted that the task of today’s generation is in preserving it.

Fr. Nikola Radis, thanking everyone who helped in organizing this event, reminded them that it is important to finish the frescoing of the church, which supported by all in attendance. Aleksandar, a Russian friend of the parish, brought joy to all in attendance with his guitar playing.
