AN EVENING OF SPIRITUAL MUSIC IN WATERLOO

Waterloo, Ontario - On Saturday, February 6, 2016, following the Canadian Diocesan Annual Assembly, His Holiness Patriarch Irinej of Serbia visited the St. George Church in Waterloo, near Toronto.

Accompanying His Holiness were the Episcopal Deputy V. Rev. Stavrophor Vasilije Tomic and Protodeacon Damjan Bozic. In the formal banquet hall a concert of spiritual music was prepared in honor of the Serbian Patriarch Irinej, administrator of the Diocese of Canada.

The welcoming committee was large and varied. Besides the parish priest V. Rev. Stavrophor Dusan Gnjatic and the president of the church school congregation Milan Lesic, welcoming the patriarch were children in their folklore dress and many faithful. Upon Patriarch's entrance seven mixed choirs sang Ispola eti despota. After the singing of the Canadian, Russian and Serbian anthems the concert began. The choirs sang in the following order: St. Sava Choir from Mississauga under the direction of Janeza Govedinka; St. John of Damascus Choir, Georgina Grujucic, director; St. Nicholas Choir from Hamilton, Jasmina Vucurovic, director; children's choir St. Roman the Melodist from Kitchener, Biljana Vazic, director; the Russian choir from Christ the Savior Church in Toronto, Elena Eremeeva, director; St. George children's orchestra from Waterloo, teacher: Katarina Popovic and the girl's singing group Bozuri from Kitchener and sister Djina Okuka.

Compositions by Bortnjanski, Kotur, Babovic, Stankovic, Adamovic, Hristic, Ivanova, Makarova, Stepanov....Besides spiritua music there was also folk music performed. Fr. Dusan expressed his gratitude at the end of the program, thanking in the first place His Holiness for his visit, his care and love which he has shown towards this community and to all Serbs of Canada.
