CATHEDRAL DISCUSSION SERIES EXPLORES
INTERSECTION OF SCIENCE AND CHRISTIANITY

Chicago, IL – Continuing the monthly discussion gatherings under the auspices of the Young Adult Fellowship of Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in Chicago, Illinois, the group heard a captivating presentation on Thursday, October 22, 2009 by special guest Rev. Father Aleksa Micich, parish priest of St. Luke Serbian Orthodox Church in Washington, DC, who explored the intersection of science and Christianity.

Fr. Aleksa’s energized speech outlined a certain mode of thinking according to which scientific and Scriptural knowledge can be applied together in order to discern the truth, which for Orthodox Christians is not merely a philosophical concept, but rather the Incarnate God Who said, “I am the Truth.”

“Most people believe, incorrectly, that science and theology are two opposing schools of thought.  However, when one considers the parts of the theory of evolution that have not been disproven he sees that these processes seem to match the phases of Creation described in the Book of Genesis.  Similarly, the first and second laws of thermodynamics would seem to mirror some of the teachings of the Holy Fathers of the Church related to the nature and energies of God,” Fr. Aleksa said.

“What you must remember is that every –ology, whether biology, or psychology, or theology, has at its root the word Logos, which for us means Christ, the Divine Word, the reasoning of God brought down to the level of man.  Thus, our studies of the biosphere, or mind, or scriptures, must be rooted in our faith in Him, Who is knowledge and truth revealed,” he continued.

The next gathering sponsored by the Young Adult Fellowship will delve into the topic of Psychology and Orthodoxy, and will be held at a date to be announced.
