CHURCH SCHOOL CHILDREN FROM SAINT GEORGE PARISH IN SCHERERVILLE
VISITED THE NATIVITY OF THE MOST HOLY MOTHER OF GOD MONASTERY

Schererville, IN – On Saturday, October 2, 2010, the Church School children of the St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Schererville, Indiana, together with their teachers, parents and family members, paid a visit to the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God Stavropegial Monastery in New Carlisle, Indiana. This blessed and most joyous pilgrimage began with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy at the monastery church. At the conclusion of the service Fr. Dobrivoje thanked the Abbess, Mother Makrina, and the nuns of the monastery for their traditional monastic kindness and hospitality. Also, he profoundly explained the most significant role monasteries have played and now play in the life of our Holy Orthodox Church. For many of the pilgrims, this was their first visit to the monastery.

The Good Lord was also gentle to us granting us the most beautiful and sunny autumn day which made our stay even more wonderful and pleasurable. While the children enjoyed playing various games on the monastery grounds, the adults toured and explored its spiritual riches, especially its peacefulness, serenity and prayerful atmosphere. Later, as part of the art and craft program, our younger children made decorative beeswax candles. At the same time, sister Paraskeva was very gracious to teach the altar boys of our church how to read the Epistle. This indeed was a great learning experience for them. The next day, during the Divine Liturgy, a couple of our students did a wonderful job reading.

The combination of prayer, playfulness and fellowship made the monastery pilgrimage of our parish the most memorable and unforgettable one. All of us, children and adults, had a great learning experience. Above all, we learned that the most important things in the life of an Orthodox Christian are the love of God and love of man. Inspired by these two holy virtues, a few faithful nuns and monks were able to build such a magnificent monastic community, which draws visitors and pilgrims from all over the world. As one of our parishioners stated: “If it was just for the sign at the entrance gate of the monastery alone, it would be enough for me to be proud of this place.” The sign reads: Serbian Orthodox Monastery 1990.
